From Earth as Gift to Earth as Commodity
A Public Reading on Land, Power, and People
How do we take one outrage and pretend it has nothing to do with another?
How do we speak of poisoned land without speaking of poisoned lives?
How do we speak of exploited
people without naming the system that requires exploitation?
This separation is not confusion. It is design. It is how destruction survives. There was a time when the land was not owned—not because people were naïve, but because they were wise. The earth was not property. It was relation.
You took what you needed. You returned what you could. Survival required restraint. The health of the people and the health of the land were the same question.
The first violence did not arrive with fire. It arrived with lines. Maps. Deeds. Fences. What had been shared was claimed. What had been living became inventory.
Accumulation was renamed success.
Extraction was renamed progress.
A system trained to conquer land will not stop there. It learns. Bodies are ranked. Labor is stolen. Lives are reduced to usefulness.
Machines removed the limits. Efficiency rose. Responsibility vanished.
Depletion is not theory. It is response. Dead soil. Dry rivers. Burning forests. Breaking climates.
As land fails, people are displaced. As resources vanish, control tightens.
Today, chains are unnecessary. Debt, precarity, and fear do the work.
Survival itself becomes leverage. There is nothing left to take that does not break the future. Growth that requires destruction is not progress. It is delay.
Wealth is not accumulation. Wealth is living land. Wealth is free people. Wealth is a future that can still be
entered.
You cannot destroy the land without destroying the people. You cannot exploit the people without exhausting the land.
This has always been one system. And it will take one reckoning to end it.
